Many years ago, there was a report that John Travolta, the American star made famous by Saturday Night Fever, was bitten by his dog when he kissed it! Some of my friends are impressed by the way westerners get cozy with their pets. The media seems to portray them as easy going with animals, often caressing them, hugging them and even kissing them without a thought of the health hazards that come from this seemingly loving gestures. Asians however are brought out from young not to approach or touch animals especially strays. World Society for the Protection of Animals projects officer Dr Natasha Lee said there was a general fear for stray cats and dogs especially when these could spread diseases like rabies and fungal infections, parasites like worms and unicellular organisms, too! Danger lurks in these seemingly harmless creatures!
