Varanasi has been mentioned in many Hindu scriptures including the Rigveda, Skanda Purana, Ramayana, and the Mahabharata. Legend has it that the city was founded by the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva. During the time of Gautama Buddha Varanasi was the capital of the Kingdom of Kashi. The city is an important pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists.
