Vesak Day, sometimes referred to as Buddha's birthday actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment Nirvana, and passing (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha. In Japan, Vesak is known as hanamatsuri, Kanbutsu-e, Goutan-e , Busshou-e, Yokubutsu-e, Ryuge-e or Hana-eshiki and unlike most countries with a sizeable population of Buddhists, over there it is not a public holiday.
