Mooncakes on the Table

The mooncakes on the kitchen table really confused me. Isn't it the month of the hungry ghosts? I asked my niece. Mooncakes normally make their appearances during the mid Autumn festival on the eight month of the lunar calendar and that wasn't due yet. My niece just smiled and said that she had baked the mooncakes because she felt like eating some. Special booths selling mooncakes have in fact been erected in the shopping malls and the cakes can already be ordered online. Never mind that it's still the Ghost Festival. The fact is the living wants to eat. And I'm having a bite of the mooncakes on the table. And come to think about it too, it has been the practice for many years now that mooncakes are sold long before the actual mid Autumn festival begins. Talk about commercialism.
