In Lombok, our guide took us to a seemingly secluded place for a bite of a Lombok specialty, sate bulayak; which is beef or chicken satay served with a Lombok sauce and bulayak, the latter being rice cooked in leaf. The place was rather shady, with lots of trees and little stalls like traditional houses which you have to climb up to and sit on a mat on the wooden floor to eat. There were little streams with clear running water and blooming water hyacinth in places where the water was stagnant. Here was supposed to be a place people come to for satay but most stalls were empty and we were about the only patrons. I remember coming across a satay seller in Solo a long time ago. The hawkers there barbecued the meat on the ground. It was not hygienic there and neither was it here. There were rubbish in the streams and flies while we ate. And in case if you are wondering, the satay weren't as tasty the ones we had back home.
