Indian Dishes

Idli, the rice cake from india is made by steaming a batter consisting of black lentils; and since the lentils are dehusked and fermented before hand, it is most certainly healthy and easily digestible. In Southern India, it's a popular food for breakfast; Malaysia too; I'm sure. Just the other day some colleagues treated us to the savoury cake and we had it served with sambar. The latter is a vegetable stew, lentil-based; cooked with dal and tamarind broth. Sambar was believed to have been invented in the mid 1700s by a Maratha king, Sambhaji when he tried to make dal curry. He added tamarind to the dal and hence, sambar was created.
