A Different Kind of Bread

When in Northern India, there wasn't a moment when I came across roti canai. Roti canai is a flatbread dish eaten with dal or or other types of curry. That the dish has an Indian link however is undeniable. Even its name gives it away; roti meaning bread in many Indian languages and it is thought that canai refers to the Indian city of Chennai. Roti canai however is said to be a Malaysian creation, a variation of the Indian flatbread, parotta. Mamak that is Indian Muslims, are credited for bringing the dish to Malaysia and it is not surprising then that roti canai is served mostly in Mamak stalls. Their roti canai is certainly the best. The one I had at home wasn't that bad though; a bit hard maybe but still yummy...
