Skiing, the use of skis to glide on snow; has a long history, at least five millennia it is said. Since the modern version of skiing had its beginnings in Scandinavia, it's natural to think that skiing is a western sport. It is reported however that some ancient paintings suggest that skiing has been practised more than 100 centuries ago in China. There is still a debate on this; but as far as skiing without snow is concerned; if it does not start in China, it most certainly is practised there!
