Someone shared her bubur cha cha recipe in Fb the other day, saying it is a compulsory dish for Chap Goh Meh. The Hokkien in Malaysia called the sweet dessert dubo chehcheh and I just heard it is indeed a must have dish then since the name implies abundance; something auspicious. Bubur cha cha which is prepared using pearled sago, sweet potatoes, yams, bananas, coconut milk, pandan leaves, sugar and salt however; is not just found in Malaysian cuisine but Indonesian cuisine as well. Said to be a creation of Betawis, Malays and Peranakans; I wouldn't be surprised if the dish is a must have only for local Chinese especially the Peranakans who are descendants of early Chinese migrants who inter-marry with local Malays and settled in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Happy Chap Goh Meh!
