Blue Zongzi

It must be years since I had had a blue chang, a nyonya or peranakan zongzi that is. The first one I had was bought from Jonker Street in Melaka. A nyonya or peranakan zongzi is different from the ones sold in the local market or the ones made at home. The one in the market is brown, maybe juicier too since a fat pork belly is usually used as one of its fillings. The zongzi from Jonker Street is blue just like the one bought online, a peranakan one of course, only that it came from Penang. Bunga telang gives the peranakan zongzi its distinctive blue colour while spices like coriander seeds and the aromatic ginger called kencur give it its distinctive pleasant smell
