Saturday Feast

When Mau Wei came visiting on Saturday, we practically had a feast. It had been weeks after the movement control order was lifted but last Saturday was the first time we met. Some of the dishes for lunch were ordered from a restaurant in Matang but since the threat of COVID-19 looked like still hovering over the nation, the food were packed and we had them at Hoi Thien's house instead. Lunch was rather different; normally, I'd hear of people having fish head curry but here, we had fish head cooked with yam and there was a dish of steamed homegrown pumpkin. Then, there was some commotion outside and a group of ladies from Kuala Lumpur dropped in to give our host some goodies; yam cakes, jelly pudding and a little pumpkin stuffed with or nee; the last is a Teochew dish of sweet taro paste. We had a little of all that and topped that up with a dessert of grapefruit. Then, Hoi Thien's mother  suggested we visit her Malay neighbour since all of us seemed to be admiring their colourful traditional Perak house. We did just that and when we came back, we loitered in the garden, had some Chinese tea; and ice cream too which Swee Ling had brought over.
