Fancy some fish stomach? Unappetizing you may think it is especially if you've just seen the fermented fish stomach in a see through bottle. Perut ikan which literally means fish stomach can be very delicious though if it's the sweet and sour curry-like Nyonya dish we are talking about. Besides fermented fish stomach, various vegetables such as long beans, pineapples and eggplants are added and aromatic herbs like daun kadok and various spices too. Mum's perut ikan, I remember, was especially mouth watering but I was thankful for the neighbour's version. It had been years since I had had any perut ikan, not until the neighbour next door sent a bowl over.
