Croissants, I thought look somewhat like snails but the French actually called them croissant because of their crescent shape. Croissant is crescent in French; its original Austrian counterpart, Kipferl while denser and less flaky, has a crescent shape too. An Austrian had opened a Viennese bakery in Paris in the 1830s and had inspired the French to make their own versions. Bet they don't have one stuffed with garlic though!
